Startup Zone Residency FAQs

We get a lot of questions about our programming – particularly our residency program. To help clarify some confusion centered on our supports, we’ve prepared this list of FAQs. Have more questions or what to chat startups? Reach out any time!

 

What exactly is the Startup Zone?

Don’t worry – we get this question a lot!

The Startup Zone is Prince Edward Island’s business incubator. The Startup Zone ignites new business ideas and accelerates new startups through business model development and by connecting our residents with mentors and advisors. We provide a beautiful office space with marketing, professional, and technical resources to help startups excel.

 

What’s the residency program all about?

Our residency program is designed for companies who have the initial development of their business underway. Resident companies have workspace available and 24/7 access to the building. They benefit from free room bookings, office hour support, information sessions and seminars, and free access to Startup Zone events. They also get street exposure and opportunities to pitch and network at various events and media as part of Startup Zone.

The residency program provides all these services for free for 3 months (with possible extension on a case-by-case basis).

Requirements for residency are also, generally speaking, taken on a case-by-case basis. That being said, we look primarily for businesses that are a maximum of 3 years old, have under $250,000 in annual revenue, and have high-growth potential – meaning that your market can extend beyond PEI.

 

That’s exactly the support my startup needs! How do I apply?

Applications for the residency program can be filled out online here. Applicants may be asked to meet with our bureau panel for a quick pitch as part of the application process.

 

I’m not sure if my company is the right fit for the residency program. How do I know if I should apply or not?

If you’re unsure if you should apply, we encourage you to reach out to us to discuss your options. Even if the residency program isn’t the right move for your company at present, we will do our best to set you up with the resources you need – here at Startup Zone or otherwise. We’re always open to chat so stop by our space or shoot us an email anytime – info@startupzone.ca. That being said, it never hurts to apply anyway!

 

Does Startup Zone only accept IT companies into the residency program?

No. Although a lot of modern startups are IT-based, we do not limit any of our supports to one sector – we’re happy to help companies with just about any type of focus!

 

I’m not part of the residency program nor have I applied. Can I still benefit from Startup Zone supports?

If you have a startup company that – for one reason or another – is not currently a part of the residency program, there is still opportunity to benefit from many of our services – events, sessions, office hours, and more. Get in touch with us to chat about your idea or company and your needs. We’ll do our best to set you up with the resources you need to move your business forward! In most cases, we can still provide you access to our info sessions, seminars, and office hour supports.

I don’t have a startup company – can I still take part in events and sessions at Startup Zone?

Yes! We frequently have events, sessions, and seminars that are open to ANYONE. Some events may be ticketed, but we do our best to keep the cost low.
